Role Playing Quidditch

A nice summary of Quidditch rules can be found at the Harry Potter Fanzone. Please familiarise yourself with the rules of Quidditch before role-playing in a match.

Thread structure

Each Quidditch match will be role-played within two threads.

  • The main Quidditch thread where the players, referees and commentator may posts.
  • Spectator thread, where all other members may post. The commentator will also post here so spectators know what is happening in the match.

Post length

Posts should be kept to under 2 paragraphs (unless there is a special need for the post to be longer). Quidditch matches need to move quickly, and long posts make it difficult for members to follow the action.

However, to keep the game interesting posts should be at least one full paragraph (at least 3-4 full sentences). If your post doesn't meet this requirement, your character's action will fail (eg a Keeper won't block a goal, a Beater won't hit their target, a Chaser will lose the Quaffle).

Colour coding

Certain parts of Quidditch posts should be colour coded. These include player names, balls and referee posts.

The following colour codes should be used during Quidditch matches:

  • Gryffindor player names - IndianRed --> Gryffindor player
  • Hufflepuff player names - Yellow --> Hufflepuff player
  • Ravenclaw player names - LightBlue --> Ravenclaw player
  • Slytherin player names - LimeGreen --> Slytherin player
  • Quidditch balls - Pink --> Quaffle
  • Referee (to be used only be Referees) - Beige --> Referee text...

These codes are also available in the 'Change Color' dropdown list on the new post page.

Using these colours makes it easier to see when your player needs to respond and helps readers quickly know which team is doing what, etc.

Post frequency

To give everyone a fair go, no more than 4 posts should be posted by one member in 24 hours.

Errors in posts

Ensure you have read all new posts before responding. If you post about something that hasn't happened you will lose 5 house points.

If someone posts incorrectly about an action in the game, make an OOC post and the game will stop until a Referee responds.

Powerplay

Do not role-play your character as being too skilled in Quidditch. Unnatural ability will result in an OOC comment from a referee. If you continue to role-play your character with 'super-powers' a message will be sent to Admin to follow up on the matter and could result in your removal from the Quidditch team.

Inactivity

If your character is in possession of the Quaffle and you haven't posted for 24 hours another play may steal the Quaffle from your character.

If a Keeper hasn't responded to a goal within 24 hours the goal is assumed to go in, and the Referee will post the ball returning to play.

If you don't respond to a Bludger attack on your character within 24 hours it is assumed to have hit your character, and your attacker may post it successfully hitting your character.

Starting matches

All match threads will be linked to the calendar. They are locked until the match begins.

The match will be started and unlocked by a member of the Quidditch group. After the first post, 24 hours is allowed for players to post if they wish.

The head referee will post the release of the balls 24 hours after the thread was unlocked.

First possessions

The first Chaser to post after the balls are released may take first possession of the Quaffle. The first beaters to reply may 'take possession' of the Bludgers.

Scoring

The Quaffle must be passed twice (consecutively) before shooting for a goal.

Example 1: Shaun catches the Quaffle and passes to Jane.
Janes passes the Quaffle to Luke.
Luke shoots for a goal.

Example 2: Shaun catches the Quaffle and passes to Jane.
Jane passes the Quaffle back to Shaun.
Shaun shoots for a goal.

If attacked by a Bludger an additional pass is required.

Example 3: Shaun catches the Quaffle and passes to Jane.
Jane dodges a Bludger attack and passes to Luke.
Luke passes back to Jane.
Jane shoots for a goal.

If the Quaffle is stolen by the other team, the pass count is reset and once the team gets the Quaffle back they must perform the two consecutive passes again.

Pass vs Steal

Pass vs Steal

  • Pass: A pass is a toss of the Quaffle between two members of the same team.
  • Steal: A steal happens when a chaser from one team passes the Quaffle, and the opposing team intercepts and catches it.

Appearance of the Snitch

The appearance of the Snitch follows are very precise process. This process is outlined below.

Seekers may post at ANY TIME looking for the Snitch. Seekers are encouraged to interact in the game so the Beaters can hit Bludgers toward them. These posts do NOT count toward the three final posts.

The Snitch will appear on a predetermined page of the match thread. This secret post number will be decided before the match commences and will be PMed to both Seekers.

When the predetermined page comes about, the referee will wait for both Seekers to be online.

The referee will PM them to ensure they're ready.

Both Seekers must reply they're ready.

The referee will post the OFFICIAL release of the Snitch when both Seekers have confirmed that they are ready to go.

After all of these steps have been taken and the Snitch is released, THEN the Seekers must have a 'race to the end' by posting two posts (2 paragraphs -- 7 full sentences each) spotting the Snitch and racing after it. During this time there must be at least 1 other post (from any other player - which could be the other Seeker) in-between each Seeker's posts.

The 3rd and final post will be attempting to catch the Snitch. Whoever gets that third post in there first, and if all is according to the rules, that team scores 150 points. However, if a Seeker blunders and only posts one paragraph in their post, or a 2 line paragraph, they must fix it before the other team catches the Snitch, or the other team makes the catch.

These technique ensures that both seekers are present and can 'battle it out' at the end of the match, thus not giving one team an advantage over another.

Catching the Snitch

Please refer to 'Appearance of the Snitch' above for details.

If one of a Seeker's final posts does not meet the minimum post length requirements, they may not edit the post. Instead, they must make an extra post trying to catch the Snitch.

Pre-writing posts

Pre-writing posts for Seekers for the end of the game is considered cheating. Any Seeker caught pre-writing posts will automatically be disqualified and the win will go to the other team.

Fouls

The following information on different foul types was taken from the HP Lexicon. Penalties for offending players are listed in brackets after the foul description.

  • blagging - grabbing onto the broom tail of another player (penalty shot for victim's team)
  • blatching/skinning - flying to intentionally collide with another player (penalty shot for victim's team)
  • blurting - locking broom handles with another player to pull them off course (offender to take time out for 6 posts)
  • bumphing - intentionally hitting a Bludger toward the crowd in order to halt a game momentarily and thereby denying an opposing Chaser a score (penalty shot for victim's team)
  • cobbing - excessive use of elbows (offender to take time-out for 6 posts)
  • flacking (Keepers) - putting any part of their body through a goal hoop to prevent a score (penalty shot for other team)
  • haversacking (Chasers) - when the Quaffle goes through the hoop before it is released from the Chaser's hand (it must be thrown to score) (no score)
  • quafflepocking (Chasers) - Tampering with a Quaffle to make it fly differently (offender to take time-out for 6 posts)
  • snitchnip - when any other player than the Seeker touches the Golden Snitch (penalty shot for victim's team)
  • stooging - where two of the Chasers ram the opposing Keeper aside so the third Chaser can score a goal (penalty shot for victim's team)

The following additional fouls were created by HPH members and will be applied in Quidditch matches:

  • Georgette Foul No Chaser is allowed to enter the keeper's area with the intent of 'saving the Quaffle' from going through the hoops. If a Chaser shoots for a point, and any other player besides the Keeper goes for a save, it is called a Georgette Foul and the opposing team will get a free shot against the Keeper to score.
  • Malice Foul No Chaser is allowed to hang onto the quaffle for more than one post. If a Chaser does so, it is considered a Malice Foul and the opposing team will get a free shot against the Keeper to score.
  • Vanderwood Foul If any chaser attempts to score without the required consecutive passes, whether the Quaffle goes through the hoops or not, there is no score and the Quaffle is automatically turned over to the other team.

The if a foul occurs and a member of the opposition posts before the Referee, the foul will go unnoticed by the referee. Otherwise, a time-out will be called by the Referee. Members on the opposing team should send a PM to one of the Quidditch referees if they see a foul occur.
