OWL/NEWT Classes

Following are current details for OWL/NEWT students. These details are still being discussed and finalised by moderators so are likely to change regularly.

What classes should an OWL/NEWT Student take?

Well, that is entirely up to the student. Please take a peek at this thread Sadie has provided for what classes are available and how to help map out your student's career. It should be noted that certain wizarding careers that require OWL/NEWT Classes are being finalized right now, so the Professors will be putting those up soon.

Wait... but I have a different plan for my student.

He's going to be royalty/political/etc. Does this mean I have to take these classes? Yes. Only to graduate. Think of it like high school/college. Every single class will not effect your career, but you must take a certain amount to gain the credit to graduate.

How many classes do I have to take?

All 5th-7th years are strongly encouraged to take 3-5 OWL/NEWT classes as is traditional for Hogwarts students. If you don't take a certain OWL/NEWT class offered, your character will NOT gain credit/grades for that class.

Does my character have to attend underclassmen lessons, or can it only be OWL/NEWT classes?

Upperclassmen can attend whichever lessons they wish. Except flying. Flying is only for first and second year students.

EEP! Graduation is here and I only attended 3 OWL/NEWT classes. Can I still graduate?

Yes. OWL/NEWT Students only need to attend 3-5 OWL/NEWT classes to graduate. But wait... that isn't fair for the underclassmen who had to take 12 lessons. Each OWL/NEWT Lesson does not require students to post once and forget about the thread. To earn FULL CREDIT upperclassmen can not just post once. OWL/NEWT lessons require several posts by each student, as well as homework outside the classroom. True to canon nature, to earn a passing grade in these classes students must fully complete the lesson. Also, it should be noted that if an upperclassman chooses NOT to attend OWL/NEWT lessons, they may still graduate by attending 12 regular classes.

My character wants to be a fortune teller, but Divination is not offered. What do I do?

According to research, several classes are not offered at the OWL/NEWT level at Hogwarts. However, if a student wishes for a grade in a class not offered, Professors will be more than happy to offer a free grade based on an average grade of all other OWL/NEWT lessons attended.

I have no idea what my character will do after graduation. Can I just take all OWL/NEWT classes?

Absolutely. Take as many as you like. The more the merrier.
