Classroom Rules

These rules apply to all classes. In some cases, individual Professors may post class specific rules in their classroom. Be sure to check before joining a class.

Class structure

The general structure for a lesson is:

  • Professor starts lesson thread
  • Students enter, take seats and chat amongst themselves
  • Professor starts lesson material
  • Students complete some sort of activity
  • Professor dismisses class
  • Students may continue to chat or leave the classroom

Thread hijacking

Once the lesson has begun, conversations between characters should cease. Lesson threads are public threads and continuing a one-on-one exchange over several posts is not allowed. This is referred to as 'thread hijacking'. You may continue such conversations in a separate thread or resume them once the lessons has completed.

Ability in class

Unless your character has the ability 'talented in ...' for the relevant class, you should not role-play your character as being particularly skilled in that subject.

If you have already responded to a Professor's question in a lesson, give other students a chance to respond to the next question.

Post formatting and length

To make it easy to follow the threads, student and Professor names should be enclosed in color tags, preferably matching the student's house, otherwise white. The following code should be used to colour your posts:

Gryffindor
Slytherin
Ravenclaw
Hufflepuff
Profess

Posts should be kept to approximately 2 paragraphs. As class threads often move quickly it is not practical to write longer posts.

Keeping track of class threads

Tagging of threads is not allowed ('tagging' involves making a single short post so that you can find the thread easily later on). If you wish to follow a thread, click the 'notify' link at the top of the thread. You can view a list of threads which you are subscribed to by visiting http://rpg.harrypotterhaven.net/index.php?action=profile;sa=notification

Email notifications are sent when a reply is posted to a subscribed thread. However, you will not be sent another notification until you have read the thread again. Please keep this in mind when deleting notification emails.

House points

House points are awarded in the following manner unless otherwise specified in a particular subject's classroom rules:

Attendance: +5
Answering a question: +5
Participation (ie completing class activity): +5
Speaking out of turn: -2
Posting to leave the class when complete: +2

Attendance

Attendance will be recorded 7 days after the lesson began. Please see the attendance page for more information.
