Werewolf
Werewolves have been alive in the world for hundreds of thousands of years, living among the humans and ridiculed for their very existance. Despite this hatred for their kind however and the persecution which they have faced very few actually know the true facts about Werewolves and the way in which they live. On this page... (hide) History of the WerewolfThe Werewolf is an ancient creature, descended from both the bloodlines of Humankind and of Wolves, merged together long ago by a now forgotten magic that was lost with its creators. Legend says that the first Werewolf was created about five years after the Vampires made their first attacks upon the human civilisations that were established at the time, destroying buildings and taking the people inside these civilisations for their meals. Being tired with the way that humanity was being picked apart a group of powerful wizards gathered from every civilisation to discuss the options that they had in front of them to destroy these creatures. It was from this group that the idea to create their own beasts came to mind and experiments began. When the spells first took place no one thought that there was any difference in the people that had been merged with the wolves other than the fact that they were suddenly more advanced in their speed and strength. However, neither their advanced speed or strength matched that of the Vampires and so they were considered a failed experiment and it was proposed that they should be killed to stop them from revealing the human experimentation that the Wizards had been taking part in. It is said that the very date these Wizards set for the execution of the Werewolves happened to reside upon the night of a full moon and when the Werewolves were being stood in the firing range, ready to receive the Avada Kadavra curses that would be erasing all traces of the Wizard’s experiments, the change first took hold. All five of the subjects transformed, beginning to change into their Wolf forms for the first time in history. It is told in the legend that none of the gathered Wizards tried to stop what was happening, all transfixed by what they saw before them, at least until it was too late. The Werewolves now transformed, and more powerful than ever, leapt forwards, ignoring the humans as the spells used to create them had put a much greater hunger in their minds. It was for this reason that wolves had been used to combine with the humans to make this new Vampire-killing species. They were the perfect hunters, and installed in every one was the lust to hunt Vampires. That night the pack reached the nearest Vampire’s coven and, with the vampires having no previous experience fighting these creatures, ripped them apart completely and without mercy. For the next twenty years these five new creatures moved from village to village, their transformed selves being no danger to the human kind as a much more inviting prey was on offer for the creatures and their very nature urged them to hunt for the biggest and most trying prey that they could find. However the Vampires were not simply going to be wiped out without a fight and some, though Wolf legends do not allow us to find much detail about this, found a way to fight back and killed one of the wolves during their attack. It was here that the wolves, whilst transformed, gained almost an instinct that told them how to create more of their kind to increase their pack and for the first time the pack set upon one of the villages, biting everyone inside and starting to spread what is now know as the curse of the Werewolf. After this time the Werewolves continued to spread and fight against the Vampires, being very successful in their hunts due to their newly enlarged numbers and the way in which the gift could spread through a civilisation like wildfire. Finally however the humans decided that Werewolves could no longer be trusted to protect them from the Vampires and had instead become as big a threat as the creatures they were created to kill. After many more years of fighting against both the humans and the Vampires, they were pushed back and reduced in numbers to the dwindled and underground creatures that live throughout society today. Traits of the Very First WerewolvesThe first ever Werewolves were not as strong as the ones which reside in the Wizarding world today though a lot of their traits are seen to be very similar, which is an obvious sign that evolution has taken its place in the genes of even these creatures. At first it had seemed to the Wizards who merged the two species that there was not any sign of a change to the humans that were taking part as no animalistic urges took over their bodies and they did not feel the need to instantly feast upon raw meat or anything of the kind. The only difference that occurred with the normal human form of these Werewolves was that they became just a little bit faster and a little bit stronger than the average human, most likely gaining the same attributes that the top athletes in the world have today. This remained to be the case in the Werewolves with no heightening senses and no instincts taking over until they reached the full moon when they would become the wolves that they had been merged with and hunt down their Vampire prey. When transforming these first Werewolves changed their bodies into the spitting image of the wolves with which their blood had been merged, in order to create the species, giving them no more strength or power than the original wolves that had been there in the first place. The difference in these creatures case however was that whilst their wolven bodies were still only that of the animals they merged with, they possessed magical properties which made them experts at killing Vampires and fighting against their opponents. It appeared that the magic which had been installed in the creatures by the Wizarding council had changed the very genetic coding of the creature’s bodies and given them the power to kill a Vampire using their teeth and claws. Normally able to resist damage, the Vampires had no way to defend against the damage caused by these creatures, which were able to bite and scratch through the Vampires as if they were mere humans and nothing more powerful. It was not however, only their teeth and claws that had changed about these creatures but the very genetic coding that ran through their entire system. When the first Werewolf was killed by a Vampire legend says that the coven tried to feast upon the blood of the beast, believing that it might grant them more strength than they had ever felt before. However the blood of the wolf had the opposite effect and soon each and every member of the Vampire coven that had tasted the blood in their throats began dying, burning from the inside out as the blood became acidic and chewed through their organs one by one. Each and every one, died within a week. This however, was soon discovered to be a two-way street, when it came to digesting their prey, as for over twenty years the Werewolves did not once eat any of their Vampire prey as the smell that drifted from the ripped and bleeding flesh was viewed as disgusting by even the wolven counterparts of the creatures and so they made sure not to feast upon the flesh. It was a Werewolf named Arthur Stalemen that first broke this tradition. According to the old legends Stalemen was bitten by a wolven pack that rushed through his village one night after roughly thirty years of the Werewolves being created. Arthur’s status in life was poor, living on the streets and feeding off scraps that he could find around the village, and it was this hunger that he felt, the lack of food in his human form, that drove him to try feasting upon the Vampires that he hunted once a month. Ignoring the smell it is said that he bit into and began devouring one of the Vampires from the coven his pack had attacked, eating nearly the entire creature. From written accounts taken from a member of his pack Arthur’s ordeal has been described as one of the most painful things he had ever been through as his body seemed to almost start rotting from the inside out. Unlike the Werewolf blood inside Vampires, their blood did not burn through the Werewolves stomach, but instead seemed to simply start killing it, piece by piece, until finally his body shut down from shock. Evolution of the WerewolfSince these first Werewolves began to spread what humans refer to as the “curse”, Werewolves have been evolving just like every other animal on the planet. The intention of the wizards who had first created the Werewolves was to create a perfect cross between the two species, something that was half-man, half-wolf, and had the strength of both species. This goal seemed to have failed when the first Werewolves power was realised and yet the Wizards did not feel the need to long after the first beasts that they had been trying to create. Instead the Wizards had stopped their work, settled for the creatures that they had created which had the ability to kill the Vampires which was the whole reason for creating a new species and so was a goal which had truly been achieved. As the species has progressed through time however it has become more and more evident to those following the species that the spell’s original goal was not as much of a failure as the first Werewolves suggested. Over time Werewolves have been evolving, slowly and without too many noticeable changes being made each time the creatures evolve, until they have become the species that now roam the earth today. The first change that took place in Werewolves came whilst they were in their wolf forms and, though slow at first, is now extremely noticeable when comparing an image of the first Werewolves to todays. The original Werewolves were simply transformed into the wolves that had been chosen for them to merge with by the wizards and no changes seemed to occur in either the Wolf’s body or the humans when they transformed. Today however is a very different story as the species seems to have evolved closer to the forms that Wizards had first envisioned. When transformed into their wolf forms today a Werewolf looks to have slight human features in this form as well though it can vary between wolves. Today there are three separate types of Werewolves in the world, each with the same basic abilities but each varying in these abilities greatly. The three different types of Werewolves have been created by the difference in life in today’s society compared to the way in which society used to be, as well as the introduction of the Wolfsbane potion by the humans to try and halt the development. It is not common knowledge, even among Werewolves, that there are different types within their own species and it is generally understood that only those that have studied the research of Fenrir Greyback would understand the difference between the three. Since Fenrir’s time in the world however the underground Werewolves, having been taught and spoken to by him, mostly understand the three types well and will be able to truly understand the difference’s. Humans have no knowledge that there are three different types and instead simply group Werewolves together into the same group, monsters, as do the Vampires. Three Types of WerewolfTraits of modern Day WerewolvesHuman FormWhilst considering the three types of Werewolves that there are in the Wizarding world it is sometimes difficult to be certain exactly what abilities a Werewolf is going to have when in either their human form or their Wolf Transformation, however the following abilities are known to be present in all Werewolves and simply become stronger depending upon the Werewolves form out of the three types. In human form Werewolves commonly seem no different than any other human, putting aside their senses and added speed and strength depending upon the type of Werewolf, and so it can be difficult to pick one out of a crowd of people just by looking at them. Werewolves take physical damage just like any human would and they have no extra resilience to damage than normal humans. However though they take damage it has been known for a Werewolf to heal from injuries at a faster rate than a human would, or indeed be able to heal from an injury which a normal human would not have been able to recover from no matter how long it took. At the same time this healing factor also affects the way in which a Werewolf is able to digest potions and other mind or body altering liquids that enter their system. It seems common among Werewolves that alcohol has little to no effect upon them when drank, unless the quantities are higher than those expected to kill a human. In addition to this healing, Werewolves also seem to feel pain less than a human would, able to focus their mind upon their goal when feeling pain and ignore it through control of the mind a lot better than normal humans. All Werewolves other than “Pets” are also able to fight an opponent by letting their animal instincts take over. Commonly this method of fighting whilst in the human form is known as being “feral” and is a state of mind by which a Werewolf is able to fight using their animal instincts rather than human intelligence, usually indicated by a whitening of the Werewolves eyes or the eyes changing into a singular colour rather than normal human eyes. In this form strategies and planning ahead is impossible because the mind becomes completely animalistic and they can fight only in the style of the wolves that are in their minds. At the same time however Werewolves using this method of fighting are then able to take more damage and continue fighting as well as feeling less pain simply because their goal of harming their opponent becomes far more important than self preservation and they will do whatever it takes to get the opponent no matter what happens to them. Wolf FormFor years people have been speculating and arguing over the exact abilities of Werewolves in their transformed state. All Werewolves look different when they transformed depending upon the type of Werewolf they are and the type of Werewolf also decides upon some of the characteristics and abilities that a Werewolf will hold when they are in their transformed state. However there are some abilities that are widespread and that all Werewolves posses. One of these is the ability to heal from nearly all injuries when they take physical damage as a Werewolf has a higher healing factor than any animal known in the world. When they are in their transformed states one of the only ways to kill a Werewolf is by using simple brute force is to destroy the brain, either by crushing the skull or piercing the brain itself although this is far more difficult than it sounds given the beast’s strength and speed. The damage to the brain must also be extensive as a simple bullet wound would not cause large enough damage to kill the creature. Despite this however, silver is a strong weakness of Werewolves no matter what form they are in but especially when they are in their transformed state. When transformed a Werewolf will feel excruciatingly painful burns over whatever part of their body touches silver and when pierced with something made of this material it is often the case that a Werewolf will die afterwards due to the allergic reaction of their bodies. Some legends say that attacking a Werewolf’s heart will kill it but this is not true. The reason that this legend first came into existence was because a Werewolf’s heart was pierced with silver and it was this that killed the creature not the blow itself. Being struck in the heart by any normal object will do no more than hinder a Werewolf but with silver it is an easy way to instantly pump the allergic material around the creature’s entire body straight away. It is believed by many humans that when a Werewolf transforms into its wolf form it merely grows to the same size as a regular wolf but this is not the case. Each Werewolves size when transformed depends purely upon the size of their human body. It seems to be the case that when a Werewolf transforms it will grow in size by a foot and a half when standing on its hind legs. This means that a human standing at six feet would grow to a size of seven and a half feet when in their Werewolf transformation. It is also the case that the muscular form of the person will almost double in size, meaning the more muscular their human form is the stronger and more muscular their wolf form will be when transformed. In the Wizarding world the effects of spells do not work on Werewolf’s and smaller spells such as the “Petrificus Totalus” charm or any other simple holding or damaging charm, do no more than simply strike the creature and cause irritation. More powerful charms such as the “Cruciatus charm” and “Sectumsempra” spell strike the beast and cause damage but seem to have the same effect that hitting the creature with a sledge hammer would have, the effects not working but instead merely knocking the creature back, or off its feet depending on the strength of the charm. The ”avada Kedavra” charm when struck properly usually has the effect of knocking the creature out though will not kill it no matter how many times it is used as the creatures seem to have a magical protection from spells effects. Psychic AbilitiesIt is not known, even by many Werewolves that everyone tainted with wolf blood is able to connect their mind to another human who has been tainted by a wolf. With this ability Werewolves are able to link their minds together and hold conversations inside their minds with each other whilst those around them would see nothing but two humans sitting in silence. This ability can be used between any two Werewolves but it is a far stronger bond when the Werewolves are a part of the same pack. When this is the case the Werewolves are able to not only speak to one another but also create a physical presence within each other’s minds. This means that they are able to create a world between the connections of their minds, whether it is a dark room or a bright meadow, and have a physical form within this place while they hold their discussions. All Werewolves are able to do this, whatever form of Werewolf they are, as this ability grows in strength depending on the size of a wolves pack rather than their own physical strength, showing clearly the way in which Wolves are stronger in packs than alone. This ability also allows for Werewolves to be able to co-ordinate with each other whilst in their wolf forms when hunting for prey. Known Werewolves of HPH |
