Praetorian

The third group of Werewolves are the most recent to have come into existence and so far are considered to be the most feared Werewolves within the Werewolf community. So far humans have no knowledge of this breed of Werewolf and it was strongly believed amongst those that did know about it that to become a member of this breed you had to be born as a Werewolf and lived your entire life as one rather than be able to achieve it through hard work. This legend first appeared because those who are born as Werewolves are able to achieve this form on their first transformation and it is a natural born gift given to them by their heritage. However this is not the truth about how a Werewolf becomes what is known as “Praetorian Wolves” despite the fact that many believe this to be true. The truth behind the legend is that although Werewoves who are born into the bloodline first begin with this form for the first thirteen years of their life, as soon as they turn into a teenager and meet their full moon they will lose the form and drop into being no more than a “Guard Dog” if they have not met two specific criteria which were discovered by Fenrir Greyback and his pack, all of whom, it is believed according to the legends, achieved this form. The first criteria, is a psychological one. A Werewolf has to fully accept and be happy about what they are, knowing that they are part wolf and embracing this fact rather than ignoring it as most “Guards Dogs” will. Mentality has been discovered to be a powerful form of magic and is more than strong enough to halt this form if a Werewolf does not accept who they are. The second criteria however is one of the main reasons why there are so few “Praetorian Wolves” wandering the Earth today and the reason why even those who have accepted and are happy with their gift are not able to achieve this form properly. This criterion is that the body of a Werewolf has to be fuelled, in order to change itself into this form, by the equivalent of three bodies of untainted human blood and flesh each month by the night before the full moon. This blood and flesh can be drunk or eaten at any point during the month and will not fade inside a Werewolves body until they transform, however it must be drunk during the time in which a Werewolf is in its human form. In order for the form to take effect during a transformation on a full moon this amount of blood must be drunk every month for six months before the first time they will transform into this type of Werewolf on a full moon. After this, the same amount of blood must be drunk every month if they wish to keep the form when transforming each month. Once a Werewolf begins however to enter into this form they gain a hunger that no other Werewolf will feel as they begin to crave the blood of humans that they have been drinking. This makes it near impossible to not drink this amount each month because of the hunger inside and often Werewolves in this state will become very animalistic if they are unable to gain their meal of human blood and flesh.

There is also a third method in becoming a Praetorian Werewolf that many have not even heard of as the occurrence of such an exchange is something that happens so rarely that it is not even known for certain to be true. In some cases it has been noted that a Werewolf can become a Praetorian Werewolf by killing an elder wolf that is already this type of Wolf. A factor that has been noted however is that the Praetorian Wolf which they kill must have been a blood relative of the Wolf that killed them in order for the body to transfuse the magical energy from one to another and allow them to become a Praetorian. In these cases the wolves are only able to take on this form for a few years after the death of their relatives as well.

When transformed these Werewolves are the most evolved of all three groups, their hands completely human other than the fact that each finger ends in the same sharp claw as the “Guard Dogs”. These hands allow these Werewolves to grab hold of things whilst in their transformed state, tearing flesh from bones or ripping limbs off of those they’re fighting against being the main use for these evolved hands. The upper body of these creatures are completely in the same shape as a wolf, their muscles transformed into those of the wolves as their heads are exactly the same as a Wolf’s making the only difference in their upper body the hands and arms, both of which are formed almost completely human, though far more powerful. The lower body however seems to contrast the upper as long human legs stretch out from the waist of these Transformed creatures, hooking at the knees before moving down into the longed clawed paws of a large wolf, giving the creature a very human like figure. Werewolves in this form can move on both two legs and four but are only able to run on four legs though they can walk long distances on two if needed. These creatures are, in short, exactly what the Wizards had been trying to create.

Whilst they are in their human forms “Praetorian Wolves” Have senses much higher than that of even a regular wolf would have when it has not been tainted with human blood. They are able to pick out different smells when entering a room crowded with people and using sound and smell can actually create a picture in their mind of what exactly a room they have not even entered yet looks like. Their hearing is also advanced enough that when someone is attacking them and they use their full senses they can hear the wind brushing against the persons arm or wand when it’s swinging, making it easier for them to guess the next move of their opponents. “Praetorian Wolves” are also far stronger than “Guard Dogs” when in human form and would be able to out strengthen one without too much trouble even if they were physically smaller than the “Guard Dog”. The same goes for speed as “Praetorian Wolves” can run at speeds nearly high enough to become blurs on the vision, only able to be beaten speed wise by a Vampire.
