Character Of The Month

Started in June 2008, Character of the Month is a competition on Harry Potter Haven where users nominate other users' characters who they think are exceptional role-players, great characters, and write interesting posts. Every month there are up to six nominees, and a poll is opened to the public. Whichever character receives the most votes is honored with a banner and given the title of "Character of the Month".

History

Character of the Month was born in July 2007 when there was a suggestion posted on the Suggestions forum by Squall Tipman. Derek? took to the idea and promised to put the idea on a list of incoming features. However, CotM didn't really take flight until May 2008, when Liam Hawes and Adelaide Opaline became leaders of the CotM nomination team, and, fittingly, the first winner was none other than Adelaide. In early 2009, the nominations began to wear a little thin, but several nominations still came in and the Character of the Month still continued to recognize the best and most interesting characters of each month.

At the end of HPH Year 7 a new set of site awards were introduced.

The Process

General Guidelines

Who Can Nominate: Any member of Harry Potter Haven may nominate any character for Character of the Month.

How it Works: You send a PM (personal message) to Elayne Malashima with the character you are nominating, one to two sentences about why you think that character deserves the nomination, and an in-character quote from a post (preferably with a link as well).

Anonymity: The nominations are kept strictly anonymous, and Elayne is the only one who knows the identity of any nominators. In addition, the results of the voting are kept hidden - only the winner is announced at the end of the month.

Qualities to Consider: Things to look for in a possible Character of the Month include:

  • staying true to character
  • post depth/quality (insight, vocabulary, etc.)
  • unique elements of RPing (incorporating humor, literary devices, or other interesting aspects)
  • unique characteristics (witty one-liners, interesting character flaws, new ideas, etc.)
  • taking risks in their plots and posts
  • post length
  • originality

Dates

  1. 1st - 7th of month - nominations open
  2. 8th - 14th of month - CotM group consider nominations
  3. 15th - 26th of month - CotM voting
  4. 28th of month - winner announced

Past Winners

In the past, Character of the Month has been won by a variety of characters, from the thrillingly evil to the perfectly nice. Members of all four houses have been represented, and once two members were tied for the title and shared it.

June 2008 - Adelaide Opaline

Adelaide's posts are all very long and descriptive, hardly ever less than two paragraphs. The way she writes really paints you a picture of what's going on both inside and outside Adelaide's mind. Plus, the handler is a sweet girl who is very patient and friendly. Adelaide's character is extremely well-developed and her handler stays consistent and true to every scenario and situation her character is placed in. Her posts are filled with wonderful detail and beautiful vocabulary.

July 2008 - Liam Hawes

With very long and descriptive posts, Liam was the best fit for Character of the Month in July. Most of his posts include small details that give us insight into his character's past, thoughts, and feelings. With a strong usage of vocabulary, Liam gives readers a clear and unique description of the current situation his character is placed in. Liam's character has realistic flaws and shortcomings that are easily seen through posts and plots he is involved in.

August 2008 - Fiona Watson

With her original plots, extensive character development, and wonderful post quality, Fiona is well deserved to be recognized for her talent. All of her roleplays are highly enjoyable while the plots she is involved in are fascinating and very creative. Her posts are unique and vividly display the changes in Fiona's character and other pertinent elements to quality roleplaying. Out of character, Fiona's handler is very helpful, informative, and personable.

September 2008 - Drake Bolt

Drake Bolt's character has depth: in every post you can see the battle that goes on in his head. You always see his strengths and weaknesses (of the character) and how the mind of Drake actually tries to work around all of that for a more calm and casual lifestyle. Post length is phenomenal. He can write anything from epics with others, to keeping it low-key. Week after week Drake has shown his ingenuity with his posts, keeps to his character's strengths and weaknesses, and can give any stalker or reader not only a sense of the inner Drake, but also can offer posts that will make you laugh ... or make you cry.

October 2008 - Persephone Demeter & Viggo Damascene

October 2008 was the first month where two characters tied for Character of the Month, so the title was given to both of them.

Persephone is not only an amazing RPer but a staple character here at HPH! Not only does she have one of the highest post counts but her threads - especially the ones with Scott - are long and extremely entertaining and full of depth. In addition to having a well-rounded character, even playing out the part of a royal very well, Persephone's handler is extremely fun to talk with and her skills at graphics are amazing. She is a pivotal character on the boards and deserves to be recognized for her dedication to the site and talent.

Viggo's posts are witty, well-written, and always of a decent length and Viggo's character is interesting; he isn't always happy and peppy but goes through moods as is realistic for a boy his age. His handler - who, incidentally, is a really nice person - also looks after a diverse variety of other characters and despite this, you're never left waiting for a post. Because of his dedication to his character, thought put into every post, and the unique flavor he brings to HPH, Viggo deserves the title of CotM.

November 2008 - Oscar Parker

Oscar's posts always give us insight into the mind of the mischievous, manipulative, dangerously good-looking lad. Oscar's posts are always true to character, but that doesn't stop them from being diverse, and highly enjoyable to read. Oscar's handler has an uncanny ability to get inside her character's head, and apart from writing brilliantly with Oscar, she also writes brilliantly with several other characters as well. Oscar's post lengths are always acceptable and appropriate for the situation. And of course, the ingenious plot ideas that Oscar's handler comes up with never fail to entertain the rest of HPH. Oscar's handler always tries to get as many members as possible involved in her plots as well, which makes her a valuable asset to the HPH community.

December 2008 - Brianna McKenzie

Brianna is a very familiar face around HPH. She can be found in a variety of threads, and her replies are always brilliant and true to Brianna's character. Brianna's character is unique in itself - her handler isn't afraid to play up character flaws, and she takes risks by placing her character in situations where her character might not come out on top. You never have to wait long for a post - Brianna is very efficient when it comes to time management, and her posts are always worth the wait. They are meticulously detailed, and seldom do you find repetition in her replies. Her handler is a marvelous person as well - these are just a few of the reasons why Brianna deserves the title of CotM.

January 2009 - Keith Wood

Keith's posts are always amazing to follow along with. You always get a full understanding in his battle for control over Wolf; his posts just make you want to keep reading - whether he's with Britney or fighting off the wolf with Sadie, he's a member that deserves the title. Keith's posts are amazingly long and give such vivid descriptions of his reactions to other characters, detailed plots, and other facets that really make his RPs stand out. Keith as a character has progressed so much since he first started at HPH and his handler really knows how to stay true to his character. Also, I personally enjoy reading his monster epic posts and plots. He's one of HPH's oldest members as well, which in itself is worthy of a nomination.

February 2009 - Britnay Grindelwald

"There are always different secrets about people, [some] could be common and some could be very deadly that it would rip a person apart. The hidden secrets of our lives, are the keys to everything we are."

Britnay is bright, imaginative, thoughtful, and very attentive to detail. Her characters are unique and always seem to find a perfect balance between strength and weakness. Her plots are also some of the best I've seen, twisted, dark, and always leaving a reader on the edge of their seats. Britnay works extremely hard on all her plots and her posts. Everything she writes is very well thought out and her posts are always very lengthy and grammatically correct. Her handler is a doll and many cherish her.

March 2009 - Justin-Blake McRyan and Angell Erikson

"They say there are three kinds of mysteries in life. The first two are said to be intertwined with each other: the visible and the invisible. Which of the two is harder to explain can be argued in either direction. The final mystery is one that most people fail to realize until it's too late - oneself. What does it take for someone to see that the more important questions, the more important unsolved mysteries...are within their own hearts and minds? Mysteries are not necessarily miracles, but such can be when the facts and the unknown become entangled for too long."

From first appearance, Justin-Blake McRyan appears to be your typical Gryffindor, and his handler does a great job at making him seem like your "average guy", with a believable set of strengths and weaknesses. If it weren't for his involvement in the magical world, you would even believe that you could meet him in your school or on your street. However, Justin-Blake also has had a few amazing plot twists in his life, which displays how his handler can keep Justin-Blake true to himself even in the most abnormal of situations. Whether Justin-Blake is in a humorous, playful mood, or if he's in a deeper and more thoughtful mood, his threads are always a lot of fun and a pleasure to be a part of.

If the eyes are warm, caring, and inviting, you're looking at Angell.
If the eyes are cold, harsh, and no hint of liveliness, you're looking at Damian.
If the eyes are full of fear, surprise, and constant alert, you're looking at Bailey.
If the eyes are serious, determined, and set, you're looking at Chase.

The posts Angell's handler makes are epic and they really illustrate how much of a grasp they have on his character, playing him realistic to his personality and the situations he is placed in. All of Angell's plots are unique and interesting to read about/follow up on, "post-stalk" worthy, in other words - a classic example is the Erikson quadruplet concept. Angell's character is realistic with character flaws and hardships not every character necessarily faces. Many have come to really love and cherish not only Angell, but also his handler, who has truly become an integral addition to HPH.

April 2009 - Viktor Buglakov and Jeremy Roberts

"Being worshipped was something that Viktor would enjoy more than anything else and it was something that would make him feel as though he had truly gained complete control over her in every possible way. The strings had been attatched to his toy and therefore he knew that he could get her to do whatever he wanted, it would simply be a matter of finding out which string he should pull to get her to make what action."

Although Viktor is still a fairly new character, he has made a dramatic entrance on the boards and quickly leaked bits of himself into the lives of other characters. One of the few dark Hufflepuffs, Viktor's post are a testament to how a character comes to the school with skills, grows, and even learns how to take control of opportunistic moments. Each thread Viktor is a part of contains highly intriguing and stalk-worthy events that many follow up on fervently. With extensive post quality and immense character development, even in the shorter time his character has been on the boards, Viktor deserves to be recognized for his talent.

"After sitting up, he pulled the strap of his guitar over his head and handed 'her' over to Simone. 'Babysit our love-child for a tick, aye?'"

Jeremy's posts are always insightful and well thought out, explaining what he is going through both physically and mentally while still leaving us begging for more. He's open to new ideas and his posts are usually thorough and exciting. He's ready to help when needed and he give advice when asked. Jeremy's character comes up with witty answers to normally serious questions, and has a knack for making everyone laugh just by his 'girly' mood swings. Out of character, Jeremy's handler has come to be a cherished and beloved member of the HPH community, just like the resident rockstar has on the lives of many in RP.

May 2009 - Peyton Maine

"Peyton could feel all the tingles surging through her body as her feet lifted from the ground and they spun. Peyton was used to seeing lovebirds at the airport embracing themselves like this, but none as young as them. Peyton could only imagine what the people around them were thinking, but it didn't matter. What mattered was that they were there together, embracing much more than just each other."

Peyton has grown phenomenally since her beginnings at HPH: not only RP wise, but the actual character has transgressed in such a powerful and emotional way that those who are lucky to have known her from then to now can't help but to be amazed at the growth. Her character has multiple facets, yet retains a demeanor that many can relate to OOC. The handler, of course, is not only a site moderator, but a fun, energetic, bubbly (and, yes, snort-full) individual that so many have come to love on HPH. Character of the Month would only begin to illustrate these accomplishments of Peyton and her fabulous handler.

June 2009 - Evils Epithet

Evil's Epithet, though not the typical HPH character, deserves to win Character of the Month because, with a single plot thread, he has aroused the entire site's attention. Using many tactics and methods, he really characterized creepy and took many plot risks many would not be bold enough to do. A unique and very creative handler, with graphics, completely IC communication, and so many other aspects, Evil's Epithet deserves to win the title of CotM. This character will be remembered for a long time on Harry Potter Haven and promises a lot of good plots that will affect the entire site, which is a rarity on the boards these days.

July 2009 - Simone Dubois

"A storm had picked up outside so she knew that soon the place would become packed. So she swiftly spoke with the bartender, asking him for the room Viktor Bulgakov was in and once he told her, she thanked him and made her way towards the door. Even after all this time, she was still nervous walking towards the room that she would be holed up in for a while. The man that was waiting behind the closed door was someone she had never pictured herself with and yet, there she was, going back yet again. She couldn't seem to get enough of him and at the same time, she knew that at any time either one could walk away and nothing would be said."

As a RPer, Simone's posts and writing flow together with perfect consistency and never rambles. Simone as a character has not only progressed immensely since she started at HPH, but she has truly become a unique individual that is incredibly fun to RP with. Plotting with Simone is fun as she always has unique ideas and versatile ideas to bring to both her character and the boards as a whole. Simone also has many dimensions and complexities that are interesting to RP with and "post stalk", per say, and makes her stand out. Simone's handler is also very sweet and friendly; she has truly established herself as a member and friend to many.
