Vampires instinctively form a strong, romantic connection with any person who their vampires' instincts tell them they could spend their lives with very happily; mortals might call it love at first sight, but it's a little more supernaturally aided than that. Once a vampire is bonded to someone they don't consider the prospect of being with anybody else but the person they have bonded to. It is possible for a vampire to bond to more than one person, but this is incredibly rare; they would have to be separated from the person they were first bonded to - which would not be by their choice, as they would never want to leave their bond - as their instincts would not otherwise consider anyone else as a lifelong partner for them.

Bonds are incredibly mind-consuming, and freshly-bonded vampires can think of little else but the object of their genuine, passionate, fluttery affections. It is common for these affections to be returned - vampires can sense the potential for this and generally their instincts would not let them bond if they couldn't sense it - and therefore also common for vampires to sire their bonds.
